It’s winter in Hwange, the rains have gone and the safari season has started at Jozibanini – Imvelo’s remote camp in the far south west of the Park. This intimate camp, with only 5 safari tents, is perfect for those travelers seeking adventure in a true, African wilderness. The highlight at Jozi is ‘The Look-up’ hide which is a standard shipping container that has been sunken deep into the Hwange sands, so that your view is toe-height to an elephant. Imagine sitting in a comfortable, and secure hide at full moon, watching wildlife at a waterhole with a backdrop of stars in a crystal sky. An inquisitive hyena sniffs only centimeters away from your camera.

Another highly recommended experiences at Jozibanini is taking a walking safari with your professional guide. This will be an intriguing activity, exploring animal tracks and antlions in the sand, listening for the low rumble of elephants nearby or pausing under a tree to mull over the pros and cons of conservation in a near-desert environment. Game viewing by mountain bike is also on the cards for Jozibanini. Deep Kalahari sands make much of this area hopeless for biking, but geography and elephants have worked together to make it a possibility here. Imagine you’re on a mountain bike enjoying the sounds and scents of the wilderness when your guide waves you to stop. Feeding casually ahead is a magnificent bull elephant. You wait patiently for the elephant to move off, which he does in due course, but it’s a good excuse to break for a picnic under a shady acacia tree. For once in your itinerary, time does not matter and the day is yours to lose in the African bushveld.
