This itinerary includes 9 nights at 3 different Lodges and Camps in NW Zimbabwe – and includes visits to an extremely varied spectrum of avian habitats. The timing is set for the end of the rainy season and hence coincides with the peak of water levels within the wetlands in this region.

Highlights of package:

 

- Guided tour of Victoria Falls.

- Early morning or afternoon game drives or walks in Hwange National Park.

Night drives.

- Canoeing the Zambezi River.

- Visit to Kazuma Pan National Park.

 

Detailed Itinerary:

 

DAY 1:

- Arrive at Victoria Falls airport to be met by Imvelo Safari Lodges guides and then road transfer (45mins) to Zambezi Sands River Camp.

- Late afternoon activity will be a short walk along the Zambezi River shoreline.

 

Highlight Birds to watch for today:

Peter's Finfoot, Malachite Kingfisher, Fish Eagle, Crested Francolin.

 

DAY 2:

- Depart on foot and canoe to explore the Siansimba Islands.

- Later in the afternoon a drive in game viewing land rovers up the Zambezi River road, followed by sundowners at sunset on the mighty Zambezi.

- Return to camp at last light scanning for the nocturnal species that are just starting their 'day'.

 

Highlight Birds to watch for today:

White backed night heron, Goliath Heron, Dwarf Bittern, Pel's Fishing Owl and Giant Kingfisher

 

 

DAY 3:

- Early breakfast road transfer westwards to the Botswana border and then bird watching and game viewing down the old Pandamatenga road to Kazuma Pan National Park

- Late afternoon take a slow drive back along the Botswana Border across the Matetsi  to Zambezi Sands about 2.5-hours by road.

- After a hot shower or bath back at camp, adjourn to the main deck and enjoy an unforgettable dining experience under the stars overlooking the Zambezi River.

Slatey Egret, Ethiopian Snipe, Hottentot Teal,  Whiskered Tern

 

 

DAY 4 :

- Awaken to the 'dawn chorus' of birdlife and Zambezi water followed by a pack up and breakfast, whilst team loads your transfer vehicle. Today will be a 2.5-hour road transfer on the tar road to the Gwaai River where you will transfer into open 4x4 Safari vehicles for the last 1.5-hrs to Bomani Tented Camp.

- A short drive in our open game viewing vehicles to orientate with the area. Sunset drinks and canapés on the plain near camp.

Red billed francolin, Long tailed shrike, Ground hornbill, Marabou and Kori Bustard

 

DAY 5:

- Early Breakfast and then depart for a full day in the field exploring the Ngamo plain within Hwange National Park and then in Tsholothso Communal land for a picnic lunch under the acacias.

- Evening spotlight your way back to camp with a red filter carefully watching for the night jars and owls that frequent this area.

Carmine Bee eaters, Dwarf Bittern, Giant Eagle Owl, Dickinson's Kestrel,  Black winged Stilt

 

DAY 6:

- Depart for a day trip deep into Hwange National Park to pans such as Wexcau and Hwa  Hwa Du named by the San who once inhabited these Kalahari sands .

- We will study this habitat and the effects that Hwanges massive large herbivore bio mass has on them and how this habitat modification affects avian species composition.

 

Highlight Birds to watch for today:

Red Crested Korhaan, Crowned Hornbill, Pied Babbler, Crimson breasted shrike, Chanting Goshawk

 

DAY 7:

- The focus today will be to explore another habitat being the Camelthorn woodlands that border the Ngamo Plain. Short drives and short walks with lunch served at Camelthorn Lodge under the ancient Camelthorn tree that spans 100 foot.

- Evening will be a farewell dinner under the stars at Bomani Pan a short distance from the lodge - listening to Lion, Hyena, Giant Eagle Owls and Fiery necked nightjars.

Black Sparrowhawk, Violet eared waxbill, Red Billed Oxpecker and Giant Eagle Owl

 

DAY 8:

- After breakfast, pack up and load for the 4-hour road transfer to Gorges Lodge on the Batoka Gorge 10km downstream of the Victoria Falls.

- Evening will culminate in an interaction with the habituated wild black eagles that nest close by and this invariably ends in a display from the Peregrines and perhaps even a Taita while they hunt the swifts and martins that inhabit the gorge.

Trumpeter Hornbill, Black Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Augur Buzzard and Black Swifts

 

DAY 9:

- A guided tour of Zimbabwe's foremost attraction - The Falls. This will be followed by curio shopping at the local craft village.

- Afternoon at your leisure either strolling in the indigenous gardens of the lodge or catching up with journals and photos.

- Evening will kick off with a traditional dance show by Sebenze and his troupe from the nearby village and will culminate in an open-air farewell banquet under the stars!

Emerald Cuckoo, Silvery Cheeked Hornbill, Black Helmet shrike, Purple Crested Turaco and Bat Hawk

 

DAY 10:

- Leisurely breakfast pack and farewells followed by a short road transfer 30-mins to Victoria Falls airport for your international departures.
